He received his Dipl.-Phys. degree from the Technical University (TU) Darmstadt, Germany in 1978 and his Dr.-Ing. degree in Communications Engineering from TU Darmstadt in 19841. He has been a Full University Professor (C4) for Applied Condensed-Matter Physics at the Institute of Physics and Astronomy, Faculty of Science, University of Potsdam, Germany since 19971. He has held various positions in different universities and research institutes, including being a Research Fellow at Collège Militaire Royal de Saint-Jean, Québec, Canada, a Research Assistant at Deutsches Kunststoff-Institut (DKI) Darmstadt, Germany, a Research Scientist at the Institute of Electroacoustics, TU Darmstadt, Germany, a Senior Scientist & Project Manager at the Heinrich-Hertz Institute (HHI) for Telecommunications Berlin, Germany, and an Associate University Professor (C3) for Sensorics at the University of Potsdam, Germany. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and the American Physical Society (APS). He has also served as the President of the IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS).
